Shattering Definitions on a Journey to Experiment

Marking her 16th year at the Sawdust Art Festival, Maggie Spencer always described herself as a glass artist. Over the past five years, though, as Spencer learned new glass techniques, her work continued to evolve.

A self-proclaimed "boomer," Spencer's artwork captures the generation's spirit. Her works radiate with capricious colors and shapes, an infusion that reflects her own pan-Asian Zen philosophy to embrace a joyful and enriched life.

A seven-year cancer survivor, she has confronted the very essence of what is important in life.

"I started my artist career with stained glass, but wanted to take my work further. I wanted to experiment with color and texture. I fire my kiln every day, experimenting and observing how the glass reacts to other objects such as metal. It's like the ultimate science experiment," said Spencer.

Spencer will be exhibiting at the Sawdust Art Festival through Aug. 31.
